1….. How does the tree Heal it-self? Or How does a tree offer resistance to its destruction?

Answer:- In the second stanza of the poem On Killing a a Tree, the poet Gieve Patel describes the complete destruction and then a healing tree .The poet says that the simple, single strike of knife cannot kill a tree. It should be cut in a rough and violet way.But even only the chopping alone would not kill the tree. It would not give much pain to it.The bark will heal in the natural process of cell division .The curled green twig will sprout again from near the ground from where the tree has been cut .And if these small twigs are left unchecked ,they will grow again into the former shape and size. Thus the tree tries the resist the human attack.

2….. How can the tree be killed in “On Killing a Tree”? Or How is the process of killing a tree completed? Or “And then it is done” -Explain?

Answer:- In the poem “On Killing a Tree” the poet describes the complete destruction of grow up tree ironically. According to him, the simple, single strike of knife cannot kill a tree because trees are hold securely and tightly with the help of the roots in the earth.So if we want to kill the tree, it needs to root out the tree altogether from earthly bed. Hence the tree is tied with rope -and then, it is pulled out of the earth will all its root. Then the roof should be left in open to scorch and choke. It should be left there till it Brown’s, hardens, twists and withers away .Only after letting it go through, all this, the act of killing a tree can be safely concluded. Here the poem invokes the concept of a funeral.

Answer:- In the poem, On Killing a Tree ‘hide’ is the bark of the tree.

The rough bark of the tree is compared to leprous hide.

The word ‘leprous’ means one suffering leprosy. The poet here compares the bark with a man who is suffering leprosy. This disease make man’s rough and having marks .Like this the bark of the tree is brown, dry and rough.

The poet expresses that the development of the tree from within by absorbing sunlight, air and water .Originally Leprous means the destruction. But here it is symbol of growth. Here lies the actual irony.

Like a human being it passes through different phases of life and finally attenains maturity .The poet describes it’s bark as ‘leprous hide’. Answer:- In the poem “On Killing a Tree” the poet Gieve Patel describes the process of killing a tree. “killing the tree” is the central idea of the poem. Moroever ,the poet uses the word ‘killing’ the title. Usually the word ‘kill’ is used for animal .But the poet uses the same do describe the action of killing a tree.Our sympathy is usually restricted to animal kingdom. It is not extended up to the plant Kingdom .The objective of the poet is to arouses sympathy in us for plants .At the same time the poet highlights the cruelty of man who feels no remorse on killing trees.
